Join us on our special three day Molesworth and Rainbow Station Tour which includes a day at the Culverden Christmas Fete
30th October - 1st November 2013.
Experience all the beautiful high country spring scenery, history and share our knowledge of Molesworth and Rainbow station tours plus the opportunity to attend an iconic country fete held at Wynyard a North Canterbury farm just 25 minutes from Hanmer Springs.
Itinerary;
Day One; 8:00 am; Pickup from your Blenheim accommodation and then travel up the diverse Wairau Valley to St. Arnaud and the beautiful L. Rotoiti nestled in the Nelson Lakes National Park. After a morning tea/coffee break of fresh bake goodies we will continue the adventure and enter the rugged Rainbow country with its unique mountain beech forests and fast flowing rivers. A visit to the old cob Rainbow Homestead leaves us with a healthy respect of the hardy souls who lived in this remote land. We are impressed with the grandeur of this mountainous area with its wildlife, flora and fauna and then amazement as we pass thru the narrow fiscue of Hells Gates high in the Southern Alps and onto Coldwater Creek and then the Tarndale/Molesworth country with a stop for a picnic lunch and fresh produce, tea and coffee. An opportunity will be available for those wanting to take a stroll to view the Tarndale lakes.
After lunch we will continue over the extremely high Island Pass and on towards the ‘jewel in the crown’ they named L.Tennyson dwarfed by the impressive Spenser Mountains. The native plants are an absolute delight in this area and you will have time to view and photograph these wonderful specimens along with our rare native lizards. Descending to St.James Station and then Jacks Pass we arrive at Hanmer Springs to reflect on an amazing journey through time and history seen by few. Once you are settled in to your accommodation you will have time for a swim in the thermal pools, enjoy a walk or just relax in your well appointed room.
Day Two; After breakfast we will transport you to Wynyard and the
Culverden Christmas Fete for the day. This has become an iconic
Canterbury event and takes country fairs to the next level,
check out their website at
www.thefete.co.nz
Enjoy over 200 art
and craft stalls, Christmas shopping,
cooking demonstrations, live music, great food
and local wines then we will take you back to enjoy another
night in Hanmer Springs, dinner included again tonight.
DAY THREE; Departs Hanmer Springs at 8.00 am. I will pick you up from your accommodation. Travel with us over Jollies Pass into the Clarence Valley and river area and pass through the locked gate and onto the old Acheron Historic Accommodation House now deserted but still alive with the memories of travellers and stockmen bound up in the clay walls of 150 years ago.
Moving on up the Acheron valley we follow the river, its fault lines and unusual formations, passing grazing cattle and numerous bird life making the most of the daylight hours in this unequalled landscape so immense it is almost impossible to comprehend. It definitely feels like another world and you just cannot " pass through here" without the expert knowledge and experience of your Guide who will give you a full commentary of the history and anecdotes that make up this once in a life time experience, never to be forgotten.
Just when you think you have seen it all you are stunned by the vast sight of Isolated Flat with its acres of rippling clover, tussock grass, shiny cattle, canada geese, paradise ducks, sparkling rivers and all this surrounded by an endless range of mountains and another favourite photo stop and leg stretch leaves us stunned by the complete change of topography, growth, colour and climate which makes up the very top end of the Awatere valley country.
Watching cattle and horses grazing, the numerous valleys scattered with native flowers, viper bugloss, pink briar rose and the ever present matagouri you realise that you can not pass through here without thinking about people like William Acton-Adams, William Atkinson, the Chisholm’s, and countless number of stockmen and rabbiters who have all left their special mark on this relentless country.
Nestled under the Inland Kaikoura’s is the Homestead complex with its century old cob buildings and planted trees. It makes an ideal place for a picnic lunch with fresh fruit, tea and coffee with the magnificent snow capped "Tapuaenuku" an epitaph of Maori legend, towering in the background. It is truly a land alive with romantic ghosts of stockmen and shepherds, dogs and drovers, slouch hats and sweating saddles. It is the land of the real cowboy and our chance to glimpse his way of life.
After Lunch we will continue on down the Awatere valley passing well known High country farms with impressive history and remarkable landscapes to the horticulture of Seddon and Blenheim. We will call into one of these Stations for a cuppa and the chance to have a chat with the local folk.
This part of the journey is a scenic delight with the colourful and swift Awatere river snaking its way down to the East Coast and the high narrow country road wending its way through idyllic rural life scenes, stock, narrow gorges, rough country and the incredible early pioneer history all explained to you by your experienced and friendly driver/guides. Arrival at your accommodation late afternoon.
